Gentle and timid, Bee demanded in her own quiet ways that I take her home. She was just such a pretty little thing, like a colorless butterfly, standing mildly in the auction ring while a man with a curled mustache ranted and raved, jumping up and down like a deranged animal. Even as he praised her to high heaven, Bee just simply stood, following the young boy leading her when asked and lifting all of her feet effortlessly. I still hadn't made a bid, but my heart was racing with determination to obtain this filly. But it was only when the boy, made nervous by the auctioneer's wild words, dropped the lead rope and ran from the ring that I knew I'd be taking her home. At that point there were many different things a horse could have done - most of them dealing with running and bad behavior - yet Bee did nothing of the sort. Instead, she calmly walked over the the auctioneer, snagged a bit of his white jacket, tugging it gently, and looked toward the center of the ring, indicating the that her handler was gone. It was a sweet gesture, one so typical of her, that I refused no longer; that day, driving home with the filly sleeping complacently in the trailer, I couldn't have been more pleased.
